The greatest thing since sliced bread.

This week marks the 150th anniversary of the discovery of oil. In 1959 Edwin Drake invented the process of drilling steel pipes into the ground to extract that black gold. Previously oil was only available by finding those rare places where it seeped on the ground from underground reservoirs.

It is hard for us in the 21st century to imagine what life was like before this cheap, plentiful and easy to transport energy source was brought to market. 19th, and previous centuries cities were filthy places with manure clogging the streets. This manure from horses and oxen brought with it countless rats and other diseases which made life difficult at best. Rarely did anyone venture more than 100 miles from their place of birth and international travel was practically unheard of. Because there were no mechanical tractors spreading fertilizer crop yields were much lower, peoples diets were restricted to what grew in their local areas and life expectancies were much lower. The discovery and widespread use of oil opened up the world. Cheap transportation has enabled us to travel the world and allowed untold industries and jobs to sprout up. Our cities are no longer dark at night largely due to oil and fossil fuels. Once the anniversary of oil was a cause for celebration, now it is somehow been demonized. We ask you to read this outstanding editorial from Investor's Business Daily:
Col. Edwin Drake, right, credited with being the first to drill for oil in the United States, stands in front of his well near Titusville, Pa., with local druggist Peter Wilson. Drake's Folly hit pay dirt Aug. 27, 1859

In previous generations, the birth of the oil industry was celebrated, and deservedly so. Oil has sustained and enhanced billions of lives for more than 150 years by providing superior, affordable, ultraconvenient energy — and is as vital today as ever. The oil industry began its ascent by dominating the fast-growing illumination energy market of the 1860s. Producers of oil-based kerosene won out due to superior quality and price. Where whale oil was lighting homes for $3 a gallon in 1860, kerosene was lighting homes for 9 cents a gallon by 1880 — giving millions of Americans the gift of illumination at night. In the early 20th century, as the electric light bulb outcompeted kerosene, oil producers focused on producing automotive fuel — and beat out steam, ethanol and — the front-runner at the time — electric batteries, through a combination of affordability, safety and convenience. The availability of cheap, personalized transport is something oil makes possible, and something we should never take for granted. As a gasoline marketer told a group of gas station attendants in 1928: "My friends, it is the juice of the fountain of eternal youth that you are selling. It is health. It is comfort. It is success. . . . You must put yourself in the place of the man and woman in whose lives your gasoline has worked miracles." Oil also worked miracles for America's military in World Wars I and II. Vehicles powered by ample quantities of the most portable, highest-energy-density fuel gave them the enormous advantage of superior speed and mobility. Read the rest here.

Senator Ted Kennedy. RIP

Senator Ted Kennedy passed away today. Kennedy served in the Senate since 1962 and was known as the "Lion of the Senate". He made friends on both of the political aisle and will be missed.

Kennedy's most famous speech and the pinnacle of his career was in 1980 at the Democratic National Convention in New York. The speech is know as "Dream shall never die" speech.

"For me, a few hours ago, this campaign came to an end," Kennedy said. "For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."

Conservatives are happier than Liberals:

Think about it. In general the happy people you know: are they family oriented, church-attending conservative oriented families? Or are they constantly protesting, boycotting, secular liberals? I think you would answer the former. Actually there is a strong correlation between happiness and being conservative. Consider that: In 2004, 44 percent of respondents who said they were “conservative” or “very conservative” said they were “very happy,” versus just 25 percent of people who called themselves “liberal” or “very liberal.” (Note that this comparison uses unweighted data — when the data are weighted, the gap is 46 percent to 28 percent.)

• Adults on the political right are only half as likely as those on the left to say, “At times, I think I am no good at all.” They are also less likely to say they are dissatisfied with themselves, that they are inclined to feel like a failure, or to be pessimistic about their futures.

• Lots of other data sources tell the same story as the G.S.S. Furthermore, there are many related findings, such as the fact that gun owners are happier than non-gun-owners, on average.

• It doesn’t matter who holds political power. The happiness gap between conservatives and liberals has persisted for at least 30 years. Indeed, the difference was greater some years under Bill Clinton than it was under George W. Bush. You can read the entire article here.

Fox News continues to dominate and grow!

In the ongoing Cable TV wars the battle is largely over. Fox News is completely dominating its competition. In most time slots Fox is exceeding the total viewership of CNN and MSNBC combined!

The reasons are complicated but the bottom line is people are flocking to Fox and leaving the older networks. Remember, Fox is the newest of the major news networks and the marketplace is rewarding their programming philosophy. Consider:

  • FNC's audience expanded in all categories during July 2009, besting CNN and MSNBC combined in viewership (for both Total Day and Prime) according to Nielsen Media Research.
  • In the key 25-54 demographic, FNC posted the largest gains among all cable news networks in both Total Day and Prime Time increasing an extraordinary 48% and 70% respectively when compared to July 2008.
  • Among basic cable networks, FNC ranked third for the month in prime time viewership behind only USA Network and TNT, with CNN and MSNBC lagging behind at 15th and 26th, respectively, while continuing to battle each other for third place in cable news.
  • FNC also secured nine out of the top 10 rated programs in cable news for the month based on total viewership. The O'Reilly Factor marked #1 for 104 consecutive months in July and led all programs with 3,075,000 viewers, ending the month up 37% over July 2008. Hannity was second, up 41%. Other notables include: On the Record with Greta Van Susteren (up 60%); Glenn Beck (up 120%); The FOX Report with Shepard Smith (up 36%)
  • In the key 25-54 demographic, FNC expanded upon an already dominant lead in Prime Time averaging 530,000 viewers surging 70% compared with CNN's 377,000 (up 40%) and MSNBC's 252,000 (flat). In total day, FNC averaged 301,000 (up 48%) compared to CNN's 231,000 (up 39%) and MSNBC's 143,000 (down 7%). Meanwhile, CNN’s latest failure in Prime Time, Campbell Brown, finished in fourth place in 25-54 behind FNC, HLN and MSNBC at 8:00pm ET.
  • In Prime Time, FNC bested CNN and MSNBC combined with an average of 2,071,000 viewers (up 43%) during July 2009, compared with CNN's 1,127,000 (up 39%) and MSNBC's 738,000 (up 24%). In total day, FNC also rated higher than the competition combined with 1,138,000 total viewers (up 36%) compared to CNN's 723,000 (up 45%) and MSNBC's 396,000 (up 12%). He SHOULD be the most famous man in America

and would be if he were a liberal. Last week a Black Conservative Kenneth Gladney attended a town-hall meeting hosted by Rep Russ Carnahan, a Missouri Democrat. Kenneth was handing out "Don't Tread on my Flags" when he was viciously attacked by SEIU thugs. One called him a n***er and he was beaten up by several of these goons. The video was posted on a previous COMMON CENTS blog post. If Kenneth Gladney were a liberal he would become instantly famous, instead of nearly universally ignored. Remember Rodney King - remember Matthew Shepherd. But since he was protesting Obamacare he is largely ignored by the media. In Monday's Washington Times Andrew Breitbart posted a fantastic column titled "I am Kenneth Gladney". It is superlative:

The first round of protests against the Obama administration's chaotic and rapid-fire expansion of government came in the form of grass-roots "tea parties," which were predictably met with scorn by the Democrat-Media Complex (the natural coalition of the Democratic Party and the mainstream media.) CNN's Anderson Cooper and MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow led the charge, declaring concerned Americans "tea baggers," an allusion to an absurd sexual fetish beneath describing in a family newspaper. This attack on hundreds of thousands of people practicing their constitutional right to protest speaks volumes not just about the hardened sociopolitical leanings of America's journalistic elite, but about the brazenness with which they are now wielding their unprofessionalism. Last week on the grounds of the once-venerated White House, Senate Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin, Illinois Democrat, taking his cues from his allies in the media, referred to last week's health care town-hall protesters as "tea baggers." How far we have fallen. Stepping up the rhetoric from mockery to pure hatred, and absent any evidence, Mr. Olbermann has called the president's public protesters "worse than racists." Political activist and comedian Janeane Garofalo colored them "racist rednecks who hate blacks." And at the somewhat higher end of the food chain, liberal economist Paul Krugman in the New York Times wrote last week that they were motivated by "cultural and racial fear." You can read the rest of the article here.

Pres Obama demolishes Bush Economic record - obliterates Clinton Economic record!

As you can clearly see Pres Obama is just eviscerating both the Clinton and Bush economic records. His 8.77% far exceeds either the lowly 5.21% of Clinton or the nearly identical 5.27% of Bush. Who can deny the abject success of President Obama's record? Clearly there is no contest - The numbers speak for themselves! Case Closed!!

Yes, now we are being compelled to report those crazies who do not support Health Care "Reform" and report them to the White House. It is critical that an extensive data base be constantly updated so the Enemies of the State list maintained. In case you weren't aware of your new patriotic duties:
“There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end-of-life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain e-mails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an e-mail or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov.” You can read about it here and here
According to the latest Quinnipiac Poll by margins of 57% to 37% Americans say Health Care reform should be dropped if it add to the deficit. Here come the new Secret Police. Welcome to Hope and Change!
