The governor claimed that the voters of the state were with him on the need for right-to-work legislation.

“Noise isn’t numbers, and fewer than 9 percent of Indiana belongs to a union, and many of them do not disagree with the right-to-work principle,” said Daniels. “In the whole state a huge majority believe it is the right thing to do.”

Wisconsin Recall Process Update:

Are 24 of 37 signatures here invalid? The first batch of recall petitions in the Wisconsin Governor Recall Process are in and there are huge problems with it already:

There have been many concerns that thousands of fraudulent signatures would be counted in the recalls. During the 60 day circulation period, there were many reports of apparent recall fraud, including one man telling WISN that he had signed over 80 times. Kevin Kennedy, the Director of the GAB, has said “if a person is signing this with the intent of artificially inflating the number of signatures turning in…then they are committing a fraud on the process.” The recall committees claimed that they were working to weed out duplicate signatures before submitting their signatures to the GAB. However, the fact that they did not have an exact number of signatures they reported for the recalls seems to indicate looking for inaccuracies was not a priority for them. The GAB has taken much criticism for their role in the recall process and their initial plans to minimally check the recall petitions before certifying them. At one point, a GAB staff member even indicated that Mickey Mouse and Adolf Hitler would be deemed valid signatures based upon their review. As a result, a Waukesha County judge then forced the GAB to do a more rigorous review by looking for and striking duplicate signatures, illegible signatures, and fake names. Due to the numerous concerns about recall fraud, both the Republican Party of Wisconsin and a group called “Verify the Recall” announced that they would be reviewing the recall signatures. ”Verify the Recall” is an independent effort of Wisconsin Tea Party groups to check the validity of all signatures submitted in the gubernatorial recall. ”Verify the Recall” said they have over 10,000 volunteers to help their verification efforts.
The GAB completed scanning the four Senate Recalls on Friday. They posted the first round of scanned recall petitions online Friday evening, which marks the first time the public has had access to any of the recall petitions. Below is a brief accounting of errors discovered in just a small sampling of pages that could throw out 24 of 37 signatures:
Two petition sheets were turned in that were identical (pages 1484 and 1485). One was for the Walker recall and one for the Galloway recall. While perhaps a mistake, instances like this pad the numbers for initial reports of recall signatures.
Pages 4701-B and 4703 are also identical.
Pages 4705 is a copy of 1584.
On pages 4706-A, 4707, and 4709 the circulator failed to sign and a total of six signatures should be deemed invalid.
Pages 4711 and 4714 show the circulator failing to print name and address.
Page 4706-B shows an individual signing after the circulator has signed and dated the page.
Page 4710 shows both a signer and circulator failing to date the petition page.
While some may deem these as inconsequential mistakes and errors, it is a reflection of a sloppy process accompanied by little oversight that failed to follow the proper procedures and guidelines outlined by the GAB. Many more of these examples will begin to pile up as the official review process begins.

NASA Probe Grail captures the first video of the Far Side of the Moon here.

The new video was captured by one of NASA's twin Grail probes using a novel camera called MoonKAM, which will eventually be used by students on Earth to snap photos of the lunar surface as part of an educational project. The two spacecraft have been circling the moon since they arrived in orbit over the New Year.
"The quality of the video is excellent and should energize our MoonKAM students as they prepare to explore the moon," said Maria Zuber, Grail principal investigator from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, in a statement accompanying the video's release today (Feb. 1).
Because the moon is tidally locked with Earth, it only presents one face to the planet's surface (the near side). The side of the moon that faces away from Earth is the far side. Only robotic spacecraft and Apollo astronauts who orbited the moon in the 1960s and 1970s have seen the far side of the moon directly.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO)released a study telling Americans if they want a raise, they should go work for the federal government, because federal workers are compensated much better than those in the private sector. The CBO did an apples to apples comparison of federal and private sector employee salaries and benefits from 2005-2010. The compared workers who were similar in the following characteristics:
Level of education
Years of work experience a
Occupation
Employer’s size,
Geographic location (region of the country and urban or rural location)
Demographic characteristics (age, sex, race, ethnicity, marital status, immigration status, and citizenship).
…and what they found was staggering.
Salary:
Federal civilian workers with no more than a high school education earned about 21 percent more, on average, than similar workers in the private sector.
Workers whose highest level of education was a bachelor’s degree earned roughly the same hourly wages, on average, in both the federal government and the private sector.
Federal workers with a professional degree or doctorate earned about 23 percent less, on average, than their private-sector counterparts. Overall Federal civilian employees receive 2 percent more in cash wages than private-sector employees.
But it’s the benefits that make the difference:
Average benefits for federal workers with no more than a high school diploma were 72 percent higher than for their private-sector counterparts.
Average benefits for federal workers whose education ended in a bachelor’s degree were 46 percent higher than for similar workers in the private sector.
Workers with a professional degree or doctorate received roughly the same level of average benefits in both sectors.
Overall Federal civilian employees enjoy a 48 percent advantage over their private-sector counterparts.

Taxes: If President Obama wants to create a fairer country, shouldn't he start by fairly portraying our tax code? Instead, he used his State of the Union speech to peddle a number of blatant tax falsehoods.

GOP Response: President Obama's State of the Union was notable for what it left out, such as candid talk about out-of-control spending and the national debt. Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels filled those gaps.

Hypocrisy: As the great investor's secretary sat with the first lady at the State of the Union, the president spoke of economic "fairness." Is it fair to make a supporter wealthier at the expense of the American people?

Diplomacy: President Obama earlier this year hailed a new era of energy cooperation with Brazil, vowing to make America Brazil's best customer. Brazil's response? To sell its oil to China. So much for the "reset" in relations.

Election '12: In a scandal reeking of electoral fraud, a Democrat-linked political hack was arrested Friday for identity theft in an apparent bid to defame and replace Iowa's GOP secretary of state. How far up does this go?

Blame Game: News reports about a December 2008 White House stimulus memo claim it proves the stimulus was too small. What it really does is expose how Obama has misled the country about his economic policies.

Fact Checking the State of The Union Address: A look at Obama's rhetoric Tuesday night and how it fits with the facts and political realities of the day:

OBAMA: "We have subsidized oil companies for a century. That's long enough. It's time to end the taxpayer giveaways to an industry that's rarely been more profitable, and double-down on a clean energy industry that's never been more promising."

THE FACTS: This is at least Obama's third run at stripping subsidies from the oil industry. Back when fellow Democrats formed the House and Senate majorities, he sought $36.5 billion in tax increases on oil and gas companies over the next decade, but Congress largely ignored the request. He called again to end such tax breaks in last year's State of the Union speech. And he's now doing it again, despite facing a wall of opposition from Republicans who want to spur domestic oil and gas production and oppose tax increases generally.OBAMA: "Our health care law relies on a reformed private market, not a government program."

THE FACTS: That's only half true. About half of the more than 30 million uninsured Americans expected to gain coverage through the health care law will be enrolled in a government program. Medicaid, the federal-state program for low-income people, will be expanded starting in 2014 to cover childless adults living near the poverty line.

The other half will be enrolled in private health plans through new state-based insurance markets. But many of them will be receiving federal subsidies to make their premiums more affordable. And that's a government program, too.

Starting in 2014 most Americans will be required to carry health coverage, either through an employer, by buying their own plan, or through a government program.

OBAMA: "Tonight, I want to speak about how we move forward, and lay out a blueprint for an economy that's built to last - an economy built on American manufacturing, American energy, skills for American workers, and a renewal of American values."

THE FACTS: Economists do see manufacturing growth as a necessary component of any U.S. recovery. U.S. manufacturing output climbed 0.9 percent in December, the biggest gain since December 2010. Yet Obama's apparent vision of a nation once again propelled by manufacturing -- a vision shared by many Republicans -- may already have slipped into the past.

Over generations, the economy has become ever more driven by services; not since 1975 has the U.S. had a surplus in merchandise trade, which covers trade in goods, including manufactured and farm goods. About 90 percent of American workers are employed in the service sector, a profound shift in the nature of the workforce over many decades.

The overall trade deficit through the first 11 months of 2011 ran at an annual rate of nearly $600 billion, up almost 12 percent from the year before.

OBAMA: "The Taliban's momentum has been broken, and some troops in Afghanistan have begun to come home."

THE FACTS: Obama is more sanguine about progress in Afghanistan than his own intelligence apparatus. The latest National Intelligence Estimate on Afghanistan warns that the Taliban will grow stronger, using fledgling talks with the U.S. to gain credibility and stall until U.S. troops leave, while continuing to fight for more territory. The classified assessment, described to The Associated Press by officials who have seen it, says the Afghan government hasn't been able to establish credibility with its people, and predicts the Taliban and warlords will largely control the countryside.

OBAMA: "On the day I took office, our auto industry was on the verge of collapse. Some even said we should let it die. With a million jobs at stake, I refused to let that happen. In exchange for help, we demanded responsibility. We got workers and automakers to settle their differences. We got the industry to retool and restructure. Today, General Motors is back on top as the world's number one automaker. Chrysler has grown faster in the U.S. than any major car company. Ford is investing billions in U.S. plants and factories. And together, the entire industry added nearly 160,000 jobs."

THE FACTS: He left out some key details. The bailout of General Motors and Chrysler began under Republican President George W. Bush. Obama picked up the ball, earmarked more money, and finished the job. But Ford, which Obama mentions as well, never asked for a federal bailout and never got one. It's managed to get along on its own. Also, as part of its restructuring, Chrysler is not really a U.S. automaker anymore. Italian automaker Fiat now owns a 30 percent share, and it will eventually go to 51 percent under terms of the U.S. bailout and its bankruptcy restructuring

O’Reilly returned to Fox News tonight to discuss Monday’s debate and give every candidate reviews, and Rep. Ron Paul got by far the worst of it as Beck shushed the candidate and told him he sounded like Osama Bin Laden.

“Ron Paul needs to shhhhhh on foreign policy,” Beck suggested, “You sound a little like Osama Bin Laden at times,” he told O’Reilly. “It’s not America’s fault, and I don’t think Ron Paul gets that,” he noted, to which O’Reilly added, “and he never will.”

They then moved on to other candidates– Beck going on about Newt Gingrich being both the “the best at a debate” and a “big government progressive,” chiding him for quoting Andrew Jacksonduring the debate. “This guy has quoted and loved every President I think is despicable!” he concluded, though added that Gingrich was “right on the Middle East.” As for the frontrunner, “Mitt Romney scares me because I don’t think he sees the Fed as a problem.”

Ultimately, Beck concluded that he had a “gut feeling Mitt Romney is going to be the nominee,” but that he would vote for a shoe over President Barack Obama (in true Beck form, he brandished a shoe at O’Reilly while making this point).

If there is one statement that defines Mark R. Levin's work, it is that America's success is based in liberty and that we must not allow ourselves to fall into tyranny. Of course, no one supports tyranny blatantly and so defending liberty is thought to be easy. But the people who support tyranny don't always do so blatantly. In this book, Levin shows how people throughout the ages have supported tyranny through an ideology called utopianism, and thus ushered in tyranny through "intellectual bankruptcy and dishonesty."
In the first part of AMERITOPIA, Levin examines the work of four historical figures, Plato, Thomas More, Hobbes, and Marx. In this treatment, Levin shows how each one promoted what was considered an ideal society and how each one of these ideals is no more than tyranny. In each case, the ideal society contains a highly centralized government which controls the masses through various means--persuasion, deceit, coercion, eugenics, euthanasia--and therefore tears apart the family, community, and faith.
In the second part, Levin counters this with a survey of three thinkers that helped introduce liberty to the Western mindset and establish what he calls Americanism--John Locke, Charles de Montesquieu, and Alexis de Tocqueville. Levin shows how each one viewed human beings as autonomous individuals with God-given abilities and rights. With lawyerly precision, Levin details the many examples of how both Locke and Montesquieu influenced the founders of the United States and how Tocqueville spread Americanism to the European culture of the 19th century.
Finally, Levin explains how the America built upon Locke, Montesquieu, and Tocqueville is at risk of being taken over by the utopian ideology in the 21st century, showing how the various modern movements of liberalism and modern socialism disseminate their intellectual bankruptcy and dishonesty.
The argument is powerful and Levin's penetrating commentary is grounded well by quotes from the original texts. If there is a flaw in the work, it is in the unforgiving denunciation of the utopian literary genre. While it is clear that most of the works technically classed utopia did include tyrannical elements, I cannot deny the fact that some elements of pro-liberty and American texts include visions of the perfect society. Everyone has a vision of what would be ideal--some are made of tyranny, and others can be seen as the "shining city on the hill" and are made of freedom. If utopias are promotions of the ideal society, then it must be said that all active minds engage in the exercise.

the Confederate Submarine H.L. Hunley was unveiled yesterday. The Hunley is the first submarine in history to sink another ship and then minutes later itself sank. The reason why remains a mystery to this day. The Hunley was raised in 2004 and the Confederate sailors were buried in what was called the last Civil War Burial.

The world got an unobstructed view of the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley for the first time since the Civil War on Thursday as a massive steel truss that had surrounded the first sub in history to sink an enemy warship was finally removed.The truss weighing more than 8 tons had shrouded the sub since it was raised off the coast of South Carolina almost a dozen years ago.During the recovery, slings were snaked underneath the sub and attached to the truss. A crane lifted the truss and the hand-cranked Hunley onto a barge and then brought the sub to a conservation lab in North Charleston where it has been undergoing preservation ever since. The next step in the process of conserving the Hunley is modifying its conservation tank so chemicals can be used to dissolve the salt and encrustation on the hull. Mardikian says that should happen in about six months and then, after three months in the chemical bath, scientists will again drain the tank and begin using hand tools to remove the deposits.
'This is what's going to be the final step in understanding what happened to the submarine. Finally, we're going to be able to look at the skin,' he said. The sub and its crew of eight were lost after it rammed a spar with a black powder charge into the federal blockade ship Housatonic.
There are theories the sub could have been damaged by fire from the Housatonic or the crew was knocked out from the concussion from the blast. Another theory is the sub was struck by another Union vessel coming to help the Housatonic.The remains of the crew, who were buried in 2004 in what was called the last Confederate funeral, were found at their stations and there seemed no rush to the escape hatch.

Possibly Bright Red. In the 2008 election Barack Obama won Virginia, the first time The Old Dominion had been won by a Democrat running for President since 1964. In 2012 the Obama Campaign will be making Virginia their Firewall - believing that they can once again win this state. Many of the Political Talking Heads talk of Virginia as a "Purple" State, the definition of a Swing State.

Polling shows that the state is close between Obama and a Republican candidate. But as any political wonk knows - through the power of sampling you can get a poll to show practically anything you want. Many of the polls showing President Obama in the lead have sample Democrats much more, sometimes as many as 10 percentage points more than Republicans.

Far and away more important than polling are actual election results. And since the Obama 2008 victory there have been three separate statewide elections, The Governor's 2009 election, the 2010 Congressional Elections and the 2011 State elections. In each of these elections the Republicans have won decisively in numbers approaching a landslide.

In the 2009 Gubernatorial Election Republican Bob McDonnell won election with over 58% of the vote. McDonnell won with the largest percentage of the vote of any candidate since 1961. McDonnell won despite President Obama having campaign appearances with Democrat Creigh Deeds putting Robocalls on Deeds behalf.

Results by county and independent city

In the 2010 Congressional Elections there was similarly a Republican Wave in Virginia. The GOP candidates won 8 or 11 elections and picked up three congressional seats. Over 116,000 more Virginians voted for GOP candidates than their Democrat opponents.

And in the Statewide 2011 elections Republicans won decisive victories in both the House of Delegates and in the Senate. In the Senate - prior to the election, 22 seats were held by Democrats and 18 seats were held by Republicans. Redistricting caused the 13th district to be moved from Hampton Roads to Northern Virginia and the 22nd district to be moved from the Roanoke area to a district stretching from Lynchburg to Richmond. Republicans gained two seats, making the Senate tied with 20 Democrats and 20 Republicans.

And in the House - prior to the election, the House of Delegates consisted of 58 Republicans, 39 Democrats, 2 Independents, with one vacant seat previously held by a Republican (Glenn Oder of the 94th district, who resigned in August 2011). Redistricting eliminated three seats: Southwestern Virginia's 2nd district, the Martinsville-area 10th district, and the Norfolk-based 87th district. These three seats were moved to Northern Virginia. Republicans gained seven seats from the Democrats and one seat from a retiring independent, making the House's composition 67 Republicans, 32 Democrats, and 1 Independent.

The Democrats would be wise to look somewhere else for their firewall. The average margin of victory in the last 4 elections has been OVER 248,000 and twice has been over 320,000. The real battleground Swing States in 2012 will be in the Midwest, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania (all of which went completely Republican in 2010). Color Virginia Red.

But who are the real extremists here?

It is Obama, not a Republican president, who has decided that he doesn't need to stay within a president's constitutional bounds and can make law at whim. It's the White House, not the Tea Party, that's adopted Saul Alinsky's far-left organizing manual "Rules for Radicals" as its campaign playbook. It was Obama, not Sen. John McCain, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee, who quoted during that campaign Alinsky's advice to rebuild in a socialist mold "the world as it should be." It's the Obama administration, not a single one of the GOP presidential candidates, who has run up record levels of spending and who believes that even more spending is needed. It is the party of Obama, not the party on the right or the founders who established rigid limits on the state, that believes it has the divine right to redistribute wealth as it sees fit to those it favors. It was Obama and a Democratic Congress, not the Tea Party, that initiated through socialist health care legislation what they hope is the start of a fundamental transformation of the American system of government. It's Barack Obama, not former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney or former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who befriended convicted Weatherman terrorist Bill Ayres and listened to a clearly bigoted Rev. Jeremiah Wright Sunday after Sunday for 20 years. It's Obama, not those who understand that Israel is an ally, who is closely tied to Rashid Khalidi, an anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian associate of Yasser Arafat. It was Obama and the Democratic Congress, not the advocates of limited government, who used other people's money to bail out two failing automakers. It's Obama, not the Tea Partyers, who wasted billions of taxpayer dollars trying to establish a green economy because he believes that's the regime that Americans should live under. And it's Obama, not those who want to ensure that he's a one-term president, who is convinced that his world view is the one the entire country must be forced to follow. The Republican candidates are extremists? Hardly. And certainly not in comparison to the fanaticism that drives today's Democratic Party.
