US Election map by counties - 1996 to 2016

We have covered the 2016 Election maps here and here previously on CC.  This is an interesting map on the county by count trend over a 20 year period, from 1996 to 2016.  The 1996 race was won by Bill Clinton, who was reelected comfortably.  At that time the Democrats were competitive in Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri, West Virginia, Kentucky, etc.  They didn't win all those states but were close in all of them.  Not anymore.

As you can see the trend from 1996 to 2016 is clearly toward the Republican Party.  With some exceptions, California, New York, Illinois the country is a sea of red.  The red colored counties are trending Republican, the blue counties are trending Democrat.  What do you think?
