Time Magazine on the Gulf Oil Spill: "Has the Environmental Damage been exaggerated?"

Time Magazine in its latest issues gives Rush Limbaugh credit for being to first to state that the dangers of the Gulf Oil Spill have been gravely overstated.  Interesting...
President Obama has called the BP oil spill "the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced," and so has just about everyone else. Green groups are sounding alarms about the "catastrophe along the Gulf Coast," while CBS, Fox and MSNBC are all slapping "Disaster in the Gulf" chyrons on their spill-related news. Even BP fall guy Tony Hayward, after some early happy talk, admitted that the spill was an "environmental catastrophe." The obnoxious anti-environmentalist Rush Limbaugh has been a rare voice arguing that the spill — he calls it "the leak" — is anything less than an ecological calamity, scoffing at the avalanche of end-is-nigh eco-hype.
Well, Limbaugh has a point. The Deepwater Horizon explosion was an awful tragedy for the 11 workers who died on the rig, and it's no leak; it's the biggest oil spill in U.S. history. It's also inflicting serious economic and psychological damage on coastal communities that depend on tourism, fishing and drilling. But so far — while it's important to acknowledge that the long-term potential danger is simply unknowable for an underwater event that took place just three months ago — it does not seem to be inflicting severe environmental damage. "The impacts have been much, much less than everyone feared," says geochemist Jacqueline Michel, a federal contractor who is coordinating shoreline assessments in Louisiana.  Read the rest of the article here.
Of course Rush himself had plenty to say about this.  On today's show he said
RUSH: You know, there's another reason why the left is angry out there about this oil spill.  Obama did not lift a finger to help.  The left is looking at this, the environmentalist wackos, as such a blown opportunity.  He did nothing -- sat around for how many days, 58, 60 days? -- and did diddly-squat.  God took over. Obama cannot raise the seas, he cannot lower the seas, he cannot clean up the seas. He cannot get rid of the oil.  I have the guts to report it. So all they can do -- and don't be surprised if this happens. Don't be surprised if the partisan political operatives in the so-called media, the Fake Media, say, "Well, of course Obama didn't do anything.  He knew that this would take care of itself on its own."

No, no, no! We're not going to let 'em get away with that because it wasn't long ago -- how long ago was it? -- that Obama went on TV and said he was in there shaving one morning (which he has to do, I understand, once a week) and his little girl came in and said (child voice), "Daddy? Daddy? Did you plug the leak yet, daddy? Did you plug the hole?" So when the Fake Media comes around and says, "Obama knew it was going to take care of itself and that's why he wasn't in a panic." No, no, no, no.  Obama's family was panicking over whether or not he'd plugged the hole yet.  Very, very simple.  During the break I went back to the El Rushbo Stack of Stuff at my website. This is from my website Quick Hits page back on May 18th.  The headline was "Hayward Got Bashed for Telling the Truth."

This is what I said on this program back on May 18th: "I saw on television today the CEO of [BP].  I forget his name but he's a doctor, a Ph.D. doctor.  This guy is really in for it.  I don't know... This guy obviously has not been trained about how to deal with the media in this era, because he told the truth.  He said (paraphrased), 'Come on. Do not worry. This is not heavy crude like came out of the Exxon Valdez.' He said, 'When you look at the total water volume of the Gulf of Mexico, compared to what's leaking from this oil well, it's nothing."  Now, that's my word; he didn't say 'nothing,' but he said, 'This is not oil. It's not even going to kill marine life. They'll adapt to it.  The marine life would not be able to adapt to heavy oil but this is light sweet oil and compared to the entire water volume of the Gulf, why, this is like raindrops in the ocean.'"

"He's a geologist.  I know he's a geologist, but this guy is crucified now," I said back on May 18th when he said this.  I continued by saying, "I just learned that the British Petroleum CEO's name is Dr. Tony Hayward.  Dr. Hayward gained a first-class geology degree and a Ph.D. from Edinburgh University at the age of 22, but what does he know?  He's the [BP] CEO who put in perspective the amount of oil that's coming out of that leak compared to the entire water volume of the Gulf of Mexico.  He would know much more than these politicians, of course, and yet the Obama [regime] is now having more investigations, and Ken Salazar's come out, 'You know, we failed.'  Somebody call Obama and say a member of his regime is using the word 'fail.'" So the point is Hayward was right just like I was.  Now he's been forced out of a job.  He was attacked unmercifully and he has been forced from his job, all because he was right.  He didn't show sufficient compassion. He didn't show sufficient empathy, didn't show sufficient understanding.  So he's gone.  He's literally been dispatched to Siberia, and he was right.  He put it in perspective.

Conservatives vs. Liberals (what makes each tick)

Happiness:
Parents are  happier than non-parents, yet when researchers ask parents what  they enjoy, looking after their kids is very, very far down the  list--well after eating, shopping, exercising, cooking, praying, and  even watching TV. Brooks argues that the paradox of parents being  happier yet not enjoying the primary task of being a parent (that is  looking after one's children) can be explained by noting that while  irritating in the short-term, children can bring meaning to life in the  long-term. Another factor is that happy people are more likely to have  children (note the issue of causation versus correlation).

Conservatives  are happier than liberals.  Self-described conservatives have been found to classify themselves as  "very happy" nearly twice as often as those who call themselves  "liberal" or "very liberal". This is not a new trend and has been true  for at least the past 35 years. Interestingly this is not because of  income differences between the groups (which have been isolated in the  study), instead Brooks believes it is because: a) Conservatives are  twice as likely to be married; b) Twice as likely to attend church; and  c) More likely to have children. Brooks believes that, putting merits  aside, the conservative viewpoint is more conducive to happiness than a  liberal viewpoint. "Conservatives tend to believe that if you work hard  and play by the rules, you can succeed. this makes them more optimistic  than liberal, more likely to feel in control of their lives and  therefore happier. American liberals, at their most pessimistic, stress  the injustice of the economic system, the crushing impersonal forces  that keep the little guy down."

Extremists (liberal or  conservative) are happier than moderates.  In short, those with extreme political viewpoints are more likely to be  happy, and Brooks believes this is because "they are certain that they  are right." (Of course this is measuring personal happiness, no one  would argue that being around extremists--particularly those with a  different viewpoint--brings much happiness.)

Conservative tend to  be more optimistic about the future and less likely to see themselves,  or others, as victims. Liberals are more likely to see themselves and  others as victims of circumstance and oppression, and doubt whether  individuals can climb without governmental help. Consider a bit of  evidence.

  • You  can read these entire articles here  and here.
This New York Times article explains in simple terms why conservatives are happier than liberals.  Conservatives are much more likely than liberals to be religious, be married and have families - all of which unequivocally lead to overall happiness.
  • In 2004, 44 percent of respondents who said they were “conservative” or “very conservative” said they were “very happy,” versus just 25 percent of people who called themselves “liberal” or “very liberal.” (Note that this comparison uses unweighted data — when the data are weighted, the gap is 46 percent to 28 percent.)
  • Adults on the political right are only half as likely as those on the left to say, “At times, I think I am no good at all.” They are also less likely to say they are dissatisfied with themselves, that they are inclined to feel like a failure, or to be pessimistic about their futures.
  • It doesn’t matter who holds political power. The happiness gap between conservatives and liberals has persisted for at least 30 years.

Charity
It is well established that conservatives give more to charity than liberals. Despite the popular culture paradigm that liberals are kindhearted and conservatives mean spirited the fact is that it is the opposite. This explains why Sarah Palin and her family gave considerably more to charity (10 times as much) than Joe Biden despite earning considerably less. More interesting is this:
  • Although liberal families' incomes average 6 percent higher than those of conservative families, conservative-headed households give, on average, 30 percent more to charity than the average liberal-headed household ($1,600 per year vs. $1,227).
  • Conservatives also donate more time and give more blood.
  • Residents of the states that voted for John Kerry in 2004 gave smaller percentages of their incomes to charity than did residents of states that voted for George Bush.
  • Bush carried 24 of the 25 states where charitable giving was above average.
  • In the 10 reddest states, in which Bush got more than 60 percent majorities, the average percentage of personal income donated to charity was 3.5. Residents of the bluest states, which gave Bush less than 40 percent, donated just 1.9 percent.
You can read more about this fact here and here.

Red Eye Video: America's Candidate Alvin Greene speaks...

Fox News' 3 AM show "Red Eye" recently dedicated a segment to AMERICA'S CANDIDATE Alvin Greene, the Democratic Nominee from South Carolina.  Interesting commentary:

No contest. Fox News continues to obliterate its competition in the Cable News Ratings

It's not a fair fight.  Again and again Fox News programming continues to completely dominate its competition in the Cable New Ratings war.  Fox consistently gets more viewers that all of its competition combined in some of its programming.  From 5AM until Midnight, every day Fox gets more viewers than any other cable tv news network.  With its "Fair and Balanced" approach to the news its no wonder Fox gets so many more viewers than the same old "State Run" diatribe.  The 11PM RERUN of the O'Reily Factor gets more viewers than ANY SHOW on CNN, MSNBC or Headline News. George W. Bush's Autobiography: DECISION POINTS

Our 43rd President George W. Bush has been largly out of the public eyes since leaving office.
Now we know he has been working on his autobiography a 538 page tome about how he made the important decisions in his life.  From Amazon.com:
President George W. Bush describes the critical decisions of his presidency and personal life.  Decision Points is the extraordinary memoir of America’s 43rd president. Shattering the conventions of political autobiography, George W. Bush offers a strikingly candid journey through the defining decisions of his life.  In gripping, never-before-heard detail, President Bush brings readers inside the Texas Governor’s Mansion on the night of the hotly contested 2000 election; aboard Air Force One on 9/11, in the hours after America’s most devastating attack since Pearl Harbor; at the head of the table in the Situation Room in the moments before launching the war in Iraq; and behind the Oval Office desk for his historic and controversial decisions on the financial crisis, Hurricane Katrina, Afghanistan, Iran, and other issues that have shaped the first decade of the 21st century.  President Bush writes honestly and directly about his flaws and mistakes, as well as his accomplishments reforming education, treating HIV/AIDS in Africa, and safeguarding the country amid chilling warnings of additional terrorist attacks. He also offers intimate new details on his decision to quit drinking, discovery of faith, and relationship with his family.  A groundbreaking new brand of memoir, Decision Points will captivate supporters, surprise critics, and change perspectives on one of the most consequential eras in American history – and the man at the center of events.

Investor's Business Daily.  IBD prints hard-hitting, yet easy to read editorials that should be required reading.  Please pass along...

Mideast: Years of a growing nuclear threat plus recent developments are converging to signify that the time for waiting is over. Either the United States, or the Israelis backed by the U.S., must act against Iran.

Real Joblessness Grimmer Than Gov't Stats: Writing in the New York Times in November 2003, Austan Goolsbee, then a professor at the University of Chicago, flamboyantly accused the government of "cooking" the books regarding unemployment. "The situation has grown so dire," he said, "that we can't even tell whether the job market is recovering. The time has come to correct the official unemployment statistics to account for those left out." Professor Goolsbee is now a top economic advisor to President Obama. Would he admit that the official jobless of 9.5% grossly underestimates the pain of job losses in America and do something to correct the situation?

Fouling Up Spill Just to Exploit Another Crisis:  As the BP oil spill grew and spread and sullied beaches and habitats, the Obama administration dithered for weeks, then rejected Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal's request to build sand and rock berms to keep the goo out. Dredge-and-fill might damage the environment, it imperiously ruled — as though massive oil intrusions into marshlands have no effect.

Labor Unions: One of the interesting things about the Obama administration is the strange dominance of labor unions. Yes, Barack Obama and other Democratic leaders do owe the unions something: They gave $400 million to Democrats in the 2008 campaign cycle, and they expect to get something in return.

Racial Politics: The NAACP, in crafting a resolution condemning racism in the Tea Party movement, seems to have forgotten those Black Panthers with clubs intimidating voters and wanting to kill white people.

Stimulus: The White House now claims that its various stimulus and bailout efforts have "saved or created" 2.5 million to 3.6 million jobs. If so, they must have been created not in the United States, but in Fantasyland.

Video: Megyn Kelly absolutely smacks down Kirsten Powers

Absolutely devastating.  Fox News' host Megyn Kelly just has Liberal Kirsten Powers for lunch.  If you can't watch it all start watching around minute 3.  The underlying debate is about the US Justice Dept dropping a case against the New Black Panther Party intimidating voters at a Philadelphia polling place in 2008.

Kelly to Powers

  • "It would be more helpful to the viewers that next time you come on you have your facts right"

EXPLOSIVE VIDEO: "We Will Not Be Silenced" - Outright Fraud in the Democratic Primaries

As seen on Fox and Friends this explosive documentary "We Will Not Be Silenced" is an outstanding film by Lifetime Democrat Gigi Gaston who initially initially set out to prove there was no fraud.  What she found out was quite different, and she documents hundreds, if not thousands, of cases of voter fraud in the 2008 Democratic Primaries - especially the caucuses.  Amazing video - watch and ask yourself if Obama stole the 2008 Democratic Nomination from Hillary Clinton:

Amazing - Explosive Documentary
"We Will Not Be Silenced"

Part 2 - "We Will Not Be Silenced"

"We Will Not Be Silenced" - Part 3

"We Will Not Be Silenced" - Part 4

As Americans, we expect certain liberties and rights that were granted us by our forefathers, who wrote documents like the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. "We the people" expect that these fundamental rights will always be protected. However, in the current Democratic Presidential Primary, this has not been the case. We believe The Democratic National Committee (DNC) made a grave error by depriving American voters of their choice of Hillary Clinton as Democratic nominee. Senator Clinton, by all accounts, except caucuses, won the Primary Election and, therefore, should be the 2008 Democratic Nominee. That didn't happen, due largely to illegitimate and illegal acts. We have interviews of many accounts from caucus states recounting threats, intimidation, lies, stolen documents, falsified documents, busing in voters in exchange for paying for "dinners," etc. There are at least 2000 complaints, in Texas alone, of irregularities directed towards the Obama Campaign, that have lead to a very fractured and broken Democratic Party.

This documentary is about the disenfranchising of American citizens by the Democratic Party and the Obama Campaign. We the People have made this film. Democrats have sent in their stories from all parts of America. We want to be heard and let the country know how our party has sanctioned the actions of what we feel are Obama Campaign "Chicago Machine" dirty politics. We believe this infamous campaign of "change" from Chicago encouraged and created an army to steal caucus packets, falsify documents, change results, allow unregistered people to vote, scare and intimidate Hillary supporters, stalk them, threaten them, lock them out of their polling places, silence their voices and stop their right to vote, which is, of course, all documented in "We Will Not Be Silenced."

"We Will Not Be Silenced" is about the people who fight back by simply telling their stories: Teachers, professors, civil rights activists, lawyers, janitors, physicists, ophthalmologists, accountants, mathematicians, retirees - all bound together by their love of America and Democracy. They will tell us their experiences and how they feel betrayed by their own party. They will discuss how their party has disenfranchised them and how, when they saw and reported multiple instances of fraud, everyone turned a blind eye. Rather than support and protect the voices and votes of its loyal members, the DNC chose to sweep this under the rug by looking the other way, or using ceremony and quasi-investigations to assuage angry voters. It is our opinion there never before has been such a "dirty" campaign; the campaign that has broken the hearts and spirits of American voters, who once believed in the Democractic voting system.

We are not angry liberals; we are disappointed Democrats, who love our country and feel the DNC needs to stand for truth, care about its voter base and stop committing actions worse than what we only thought possible of the worst Republicans. The DNC and the Obama Campaign need to be held accountable for the catastrophe of the 2008 Democratic Primary. We must right their wrongs...after all, this is America, the Land of the Free, where every American has the right to a fair, honest voting process, and to have his or her vote counted...

We Will Not Be Silenced

The Disaster, er Democratic Party's Horrible Economic Record

We have detailed this before on Common Cents but this chart makes it obvious.  The Democratic Party has been diasterous to our economic health.  Millions of jobs have been lost and as a direct result of their actions the unemployment rate has skyrocketed as a result of their "leadership".  Remember, when the Democrats were elected the unemployment rate was 4.4%.
Can you say "failure".

Another interesting chart is how many people have "LEFT THE LABOR FORCE" since the failed "stimulus" bill was passed.  The star represents when the $800 Billion "Stimulus" bill was passed.

Charles Krauthammer: The selective modesty of Barack Obama:

As heard on the Rush Limbaugh show Krauthammer hits it out of the park.  Amazing editorial - pass it on:
Remember NASA? It once represented to the world the apogee of American scientific and technological achievement. Here is President Obama's vision of NASA's mission, as explained by administrator Charles Bolden:
"One was he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math; he wanted me to expand our international relationships; and third and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science and math and engineering."
Apart from the psychobabble -- farcically turning a space-faring enterprise into a self-esteem enhancer -- what's the sentiment behind this charge? Sure America has put a man on the moon, led the information revolution, won more Nobel Prizes than any other nation by far -- but, on the other hand, a thousand years ago al-Khwarizmi gave us algebra.
Bolden seems quite intent on driving home this message of achievement equivalence -- lauding, for example, Russia's contribution to the space station. Russia? In the 1990s, the Russian space program fell apart, leaving the United States to pick up the slack and the tab for the missing Russian contributions to get the space station built.
For good measure, Bolden added that the United States cannot get to Mars without international assistance. Beside the fact that this is not true, contrast this with the elan and self-confidence of President John Kennedy's 1961 pledge that America would land on the moon within the decade.
There was no finer expression of belief in American exceptionalism than Kennedy's. Obama has a different take. As he said last year in France, "I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism." Which of course means: If we're all exceptional, no one is.
Nothing new here. In his major addresses, Obama's modesty about his own country has been repeatedly on display as, in one venue after another, he has gratuitously confessed America's alleged failing -- from disrespecting foreigners to having lost its way morally after 9/11.
It's fine to recognize the achievements of others and be non-chauvinistic about one's country. But Obama's modesty is curiously selective. When it comes to himself, modesty is in short supply.
It began with the almost comical self-inflation of his presidential campaign, from the still inexplicable mass rally in Berlin in front of a Prussian victory column to the Greek columns framing him at the Democratic convention. And it carried into his presidency, from his posture of philosopher-king adjudicating between America's sins and the world's to his speeches marked by a spectacularly promiscuous use of the word "I."
