Investors Business Daily - Thomas Sowell: Intellectuals and Society

Smart people should make smart decisions. So why do the best and the brightest always seem to create more problems than they solve?  This is not just an academic question, precisely because academics dominate the Obama administration and its approach to such key issues as health care and Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons. Renowned economist Thomas Sowell argues that intellectuals have strong incentives to step out of their area of expertise and "off a cliff." Ultimately, everyday people pay the price when intellectuals and abstract concepts trump real-world specifics.  Sowell explores these topics and more in a wide-ranging IBD interview regarding his latest book, "Intellectuals and Society."
IBD: How do you define intellectuals?
Sowell: I define intellectuals as persons whose occupations begin and end with ideas. I distinguish between intellectuals and other people who may have ideas but whose ideas end up producing some good or service, something that whether it's working or not working can be determined by third parties.
With intellectuals, one of the crucial factors is their work is largely judged by peer consensus, so it doesn't matter if their ideas work in the real world.
IBD: What incentives and constraints do intellectuals face?
Sowell: One of the incentives is that, to the extent that intellectuals stay in their specialty, they have little to gain in terms of either prestige or influence on events. Say, an authority in ancient Mayan civilization just writes about ancient Mayan civilization, then only other specialists in ancient Mayan civilization will know what he is talking about or even be aware of him. So intellectuals have every incentive to go beyond their area of expertise and competence. But stepping beyond your area of competence is like stepping off a cliff — you may be a genius within that area, but an idiot outside it.  As far as the constraints, since their main constraint is peer consensus — that's a very weak constraint on the profession as a whole. Because what the peers believe as a group becomes the test of any new idea that comes along as to whether it's plausible or not.

BREAKING - Toyota Motor Corp Quality Updates:

As always Common Cents is your one-stop shop to get all of
your latest fast-breaking Toyota Quality Updates.  As everyone knows Toyota builds the world's most dependable and highest quality automobiles that are never subject to recall nor ever have any quality issues.

Toyota Corolla
Toyota Motor Corp. and U.S. regulators are looking into possible steering problems in the company's popular Corolla compact, the latest quality issue to surface in the wake of two recalls that covered millions of vehicles and forced Toyota to halt U.S. sales of eight models. The news came as the company's president, Akio Toyoda, said in Tokyo that he won't testify before Congress at hearings next week and left vague his plans to visit the U.S., the company's single largest market. The Corolla investigation could start as early as Thursday, said a U.S. Transportation Department official. The inquiry will cover about 500,000 model-year 2009 and 2010 Corollas, officials said. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received 163 complaints about the steering in Corollas from those model years, according to the safety agency's Web site. DOT officials said last week the agency was reviewing customer complaints of steering problems in Corollas. The opening of a "preliminary investigation" represents a significant next step in determining whether a safety defect exists. The agency opens about 100 such investigations a year.  Read more here and here.
Lexus
As bad as the safety scandal engulfing Toyota has become, its Lexus luxury division has gotten off pretty lightly. But that's beginning to change. The accident that sparked the wave of scrutiny of the Japanese automaker involved a Lexus, the ES350. It was the loaner car from a dealer that killed a California highway patrolman and his family last August. Toyota believes the accident was caused by floor mats jamming under the pedals -- and it was one of several Toyota models in the first recall to modify the pedals.  Now another Lexus model is getting swept up: It's Lexus' first small hybrid car, the HS250h. Toyota noted yesterday that company President Akio Toyoda singled out the model and its Japanese counterpart, the Sai, in saying that recall preparations are about to begin. It is caught up in another recall, this one also involving the popular Prius. In both HS250h and Prius, the brakes can momentarily cut out after the car hits a bump or pothole.

The Great Global Warming Coverup

Or this post could be titled The Great Global Warming Scandal.  Someday the truth will be fully known how scientists, in search of research dollars manipulated data and cherry picked results in an attempt to show that there was a thing as Global Warming.  With the recent Climategate Scandal which showed researchers ignored evidence showing cooling and evidence that Ice Sheets are actually growing not shrinking the religion of Global Warming is being denigrated more everyday.  Now comes a report from the man at the center of the Climategate story admitting "There has been no warming since 1995."
The academic at the centre of the ‘Climategate’ affair, whose raw data is crucial to the theory of climate change, has admitted that he has trouble ‘keeping track’ of the information.  Colleagues say that the reason Professor Phil Jones has refused Freedom of Information requests is that he may have actually lost the relevant papers. Professor Jones told the BBC yesterday there was truth in the observations of colleagues that he lacked organizational skills, that his office was swamped with piles of paper and that his record keeping is ‘not as good as it should be’.  The data is crucial to the famous ‘hockey stick graph’ used by climate change advocates to support the theory.Professor Jones also conceded the possibility that the world was warmer in medieval times than now – suggesting global warming may not be a man-made phenomenon.  And he said that for the past 15 years there has been no ‘statistically significant’ warming.  Read the entire article here.
At Common Cents we posted a blog titled Is a New Ice Age Coming? in December.  And of course we have regular Global Warming Updates which mock the religion of Global Warming.  Even the liberal Washington Post has a story today about the cover-up and more:
With its 2007 report declaring that the "warming of the climate system is unequivocal," the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change won a Nobel Prize -- and a new degree of public trust in the controversial science of global warming. But recent revelations about flaws in that seminal report, ranging from typos in key dates to sloppy sourcing, are undermining confidence not only in the panel's work but also in projections about climate change. Scientists who have pointed out problems in the report say the panel's methods and mistakes -- including admitting Saturday that it had overstated how much of the Netherlands was below sea level -- give doubters an opening. It wasn't the first one. There is still a scientific consensus that humans are causing climate change. But in the past year, a cache of stolen e-mails, revealing that prominent climate scientists sought to prevent the publication of works by their detractors, has sullied their image as impartial academics. The errors in the U.N. report -- a document intended to be the last nail in the coffin of climate doubt -- are a serious problem that could end up forcing environmentalists to focus more on the old question of proving that climate change is a threat, instead of the new question of how to stop it.

Newly released. Never before seen photos of the Sept 11 attack on the World Trade Center

Huge Hat tip to ABC News

Released this week under the Freedom of Information Act the photographer who took these photos in the aftermath of the 9-11 attacks was the only authorized aircraft above ground zero.
The photographs were obtained by ABC from the National Institute of Standards and Technology through requests under the Freedom of Information Act.

Each photo depicts a unique, alternative vantage point of the attacks. Billows of dust, smoke and falling debris are clearly captured. Until Wednesday, Feb. 10, almost all public photographs of the events were shots from the ground, many dulled from flying debris and dust in the air. Several of the new pictures are so clear, they come with a surreality commonly found in Hollywood film stills.

Several pictures show emerging clouds of gray soot exploding from the Twin Towers as they toppled to the ground before blanketing the city, burying cars, buildings and people.

BREAKING - Toyota Quality Update:

As always Common Cents is your one-stop-shop for all of the late breaking Toyota Quality Updates.  Just two weeks ago Common Cents was all over the previous Toyota Quality Update, the recalls of 8 popular models.  Now the latest problem is with the Prius and a problem with their brakes.
Feb. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp.’s new Prius hybrid model has received 14 brake-related complaints since it was introduced in May, Japan’s Transport Ministry said. Of the 14 complaints, one involved an accident, Masaya Ota, of the Transport Ministry’s recall division, said by telephone. Separately, the latest Prius has drawn more than 100 complaints related to brakes in the U.S., Kyodo News reported. The report, which cited the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, didn’t provide details about the complaints. Takanori Yokoi, a spokesman for Toyota in Tokyo, said he couldn’t immediately confirm or deny the report when reached by phone. Karen Aldana, a spokeswoman for the U.S. safety agency, didn’t return a call to her mobile phone or respond to an e-mail message sent after normal business hours. The 2010 version of the Prius isn’t among the more than 7.6 million vehicles that Toyota, the world’s biggest carmaker, has recalled to repair defects related to incidents of unintended acceleration.
