MERRY CHRISTMAS from your friends at Common Cents:

Mr and Mrs Common Cents want to wish all of our visitors new and old a Very Merry Christmas!  We hope your Christmas Season is filled with joy, happiness and good health!  Remember Jesus is the Reason for the Season!

Luke 2:1-14:  And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

A Charlie Brown Christmas :
Linus explains what Christmas is truly all about:

What's So Great about Christianity

Today being Christmas Eve it is appropriate that we post a link to Dinesh D'Souza's bestselling book "What's so great about Christianity."  Notice, this is not a question but a statement.  This book is one of the greatest defenders of the Christian faith and explains the logical rational behind the world's largest religion.
D’Souza reveals:
  • Why Christianity explains the universe, and our origins, better than atheism does
  • Why Christianity and science are not irreconcilable, but science and atheism might be
  • Why the alleged sins of Christianity—the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Galileo affair—are vastly overblown
  • Why atheism is a demonstrably dangerous creed—and a cowardly one
  • Why evolution does not threaten Christian belief
  • Why atheists fear the Big Bang theory
  • Why Christianity is the ultimate defense of man’s free will
  • Why ultimately you can’t have Western civilization—and all we value from it—without the Christianity that gave it birth
Thoroughly researched,What's So Great About Christianity "What's So Great About Christianity" is a direct challenge to believers and nonbelievers alike.  While it has a message or atheists (step up and seriously debate Christians in an open-minded and intellectual way) the book's primary message is for Christians.  In the preface, D'Souza reminds Christians that they are called to be "contenders" for their faith, that they should-indeed, must-engage the secular world.  D'Souza insists: "Atheists want to monopolize the public square and expel Christians from it."  Therefore, Christians must equip themselves with the knowledge necessary to defend their faith and values.  D'Souza begins by busting the myth, pushed by so many atheist writers, that Christianity is on the wane in America.  Armed with compelling statistics, D'Souza shreds the secularization narrative by explaining that while liberal church affiliation has plummeted in recent years, there has been significant growth in traditional Christian churches. And though we most often hear of Western Europe's abandonment of Christianity, overall, there is "a global revival of religion," and, contrary to popular opinion, Christianity, not Islam, is the fastest-growing religion in world today.
D'Souza then gets to the business of explaining just what is so great about Christianity.  In a powerful passage, D'Souza highlights how Christianity has changed the world:
"The sublimity of Christ and his disciples completely reversed the whole classical ideal.  Suddenly aristocratic pride came to be seen as something preening and ridiculous.  Christ produced the transformation of values in which the last became the first, and values once scorned came to represent the loftiest of human ideals." Through Christianity, a new set of values (humility, compassion, charity, etc.) arose that served as the underpinning of the West's most crucial institutions (monogamous marriage, family, basic human rights, etc.) and of American democracy.  It is no accident that history's great movements of conscience-abolition, desegregation, pro-life-have had firm roots in the faithful, who believe that all are equal in the eyes of God.  Many atheists like to claim that man, once freed from the shackles of religion, can actively practice true charity and virtue.  But it seems the atheists would like us to believe this as a matter of faith, because, in reality, atheists are the least charitable.  Study after study highlights the tight empirical link between religiosity and generosity.  Arthur C. Brooks and others have shown that religious people, especially Christians, give more in money and time, and that atheists give least. D'Souza spends the bulk of his time upending the popular atheist refrain that religious faith is incompatible with science and reason, a clash that atheist authors like Sam Harris have referred to as "zero sum" conflict.  But D'Souza, echoing Pope Benedict's recent remarks, demonstrates the reasonableness of faith guided by reason.  In fact, "Even atheist scientists work with Christian assumptions that, due to their ignorance of theology and history, are invisible to them." Indeed, as D'Souza illustrates, it is Christianity that created the impulse to sustain scientific inquiry in the first place, which again underscores why Christians should embrace arguments for a faith rooted in reason and science.

The 2010 Census: Fastest growth in the low taxed Republican States:

Not surprisingly people are moving away from higher-taxed Northeastern and Midwestern States into the relatively lower taxed (Florida has NO State Income Tax) Southern and Western States.  States losing Congressional Seats are in yellow.  States gaining are in blue.
For those of us who are demographic buffs, Christmas came four days early when Census Bureau director Robert Groves announced on Tuesday the first results of the 2010 census and the reapportionment of House seats (and therefore electoral votes) among the states. The resident population of the United States, he told us in a webcast, was 308,745,538. That's an increase of 9.7 percent from the 281,421,906 in the 2000 census -- the smallest proportional increase than in any decade other than the Depression 1930s but a pretty robust increase for an advanced nation. It's hard to get a grasp on such large numbers. So let me share a few observations on what they mean.  First, the great engine of growth in America is not the Northeast Megalopolis, which was growing faster than average in the mid-20th century, or California, which grew lustily in the succeeding half-century. It is Texas.
Its population grew 21 percent in the past decade, from nearly 21 million to more than 25 million. That was more rapid growth than in any states except for four much smaller ones (Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Idaho).  Texas' diversified economy, business-friendly regulations and low taxes have attracted not only immigrants but substantial inflow from the other 49 states. As a result, the 2010 reapportionment gives Texas four additional House seats. In contrast, California gets no new House seats, for the first time since it was admitted to the Union in 1850.
There's a similar lesson in the fact that Florida gains two seats in the reapportionment and New York loses two.  This leads to a second point, which is that growth tends to be stronger where taxes are lower. Seven of the nine states that do not levy an income tax grew faster than the national average. The other two, South Dakota and New Hampshire, had the fastest growth in their regions, the Midwest and New England.  Read the rest of the article here.

Tonight: Earlier this week, we celebrated America's First Christmas in Wilmington, OH. We celebrated a town coming together to celebrate their unbreakable spirit. It was two Christmases ago that Wilmington was hit by a self-described economic tsunami as DHL closed their factory doors. 7,500 people out of the town's 12,000 residents found themselves unemployed- just in time for Christmas. Wilmington had a choice..to either become Pottersville or Bedford Falls. They chose the latter. Tonight, see some of Glenn's stage show from Wilmington and get to know some of the residents

From The Golden State to a Third World Country:

National Review's Victor David Hansen writes a superlative column on the current state of the interior counties of California.  While not scientific, his first-hand observations of this once great state are excellent and unfortunately may be the unintended consequence of decades of illegal immigration and liberal policies.  A preview of things to come...
During this unscientific experiment, three times a week I rode a bike on a 20-mile trip over various rural roads in southwestern Fresno County. I also drove my car over to the coast to work, on various routes through towns like San Joaquin, Mendota, and Firebaugh. And near my home I have been driving, shopping, and touring by intent the rather segregated and impoverished areas of Caruthers, Fowler, Laton, Orange Cove, Parlier, and Selma. My own farmhouse is now in an area of abject poverty and almost no ethnic diversity; the closest elementary school (my alma mater, two miles away) is 94 percent Hispanic and 1 percent white, and well below federal testing norms in math and English.
Here are some general observations about what I saw (other than that the rural roads of California are fast turning into rubble, poorly maintained and reverting to what I remember seeing long ago in the rural South). First, remember that these areas are the ground zero, so to speak, of 20 years of illegal immigration. There has been a general depression in farming — to such an extent that the 20- to-100-acre tree and vine farmer, the erstwhile backbone of the old rural California, for all practical purposes has ceased to exist.
On the western side of the Central Valley, the effects of arbitrary cutoffs in federal irrigation water have idled tens of thousands of acres of prime agricultural land, leaving thousands unemployed. Manufacturing plants in the towns in these areas — which used to make harvesters, hydraulic lifts, trailers, food-processing equipment — have largely shut down; their production has been shipped off overseas or south of the border. Agriculture itself — from almonds to raisins — has increasingly become corporatized and mechanized, cutting by half the number of farm workers needed. So unemployment runs somewhere between 15 and 20 percent.
Many of the rural trailer-house compounds I saw appear to the naked eye no different from what I have seen in the Third World. There is a Caribbean look to the junked cars, electric wires crisscrossing between various outbuildings, plastic tarps substituting for replacement shingles, lean-tos cobbled together as auxiliary housing, pit bulls unleashed, and geese, goats, and chickens roaming around the yards. The public hears about all sorts of tough California regulations that stymie business — rigid zoning laws, strict building codes, constant inspections — but apparently none of that applies out here.
 He goes on to say:
California coastal elites may worry about the oxygen content of water available to a three-inch smelt in the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta, but they seem to have no interest in the epidemic dumping of trash, furniture, and often toxic substances throughout California’s rural hinterland. Yesterday, for example, I rode my bike by a stopped van just as the occupants tossed seven plastic bags of raw refuse onto the side of the road. I rode up near their bumper and said in my broken Spanish not to throw garbage onto the public road. But there were three of them, and one of me. So I was lucky to be sworn at only. I note in passing that I would not drive into Mexico and, as a guest, dare to pull over and throw seven bags of trash into the environment of my host. In fact, trash piles are commonplace out here — composed of everything from half-empty paint cans and children’s plastic toys to diapers and moldy food. I have never seen a rural sheriff cite a litterer, or witnessed state EPA workers cleaning up these unauthorized wastelands. So I would suggest to Bay Area scientists that the environment is taking a much harder beating down here in central California than it is in the Delta. Perhaps before we cut off more irrigation water to the west side of the valley, we might invest some green dollars into cleaning up the unsightly and sometimes dangerous garbage that now litters the outskirts of our rural communities.
We hear about the tough small-business regulations that have driven residents out of the state, at the rate of 2,000 to 3,000 a week. But from my unscientific observations these past weeks, it seems rather easy to open a small business in California without any oversight at all, or at least what I might call a “counter business.” I counted eleven mobile hot-kitchen trucks that simply park by the side of the road, spread about some plastic chairs, pull down a tarp canopy, and, presto, become mini-restaurants. There are no “facilities” such as toilets or washrooms. But I do frequently see lard trails on the isolated roads I bike on, where trucks apparently have simply opened their draining tanks and sped on, leaving a slick of cooking fats and oils. Crows and ground squirrels love them; they can be seen from a distance mysteriously occupied in the middle of the road.

Obamacare ruled UNCONSTITUTIONAL!

A Virginia Judge, Henry Hudson ruled today that major portions of "Obamacare" are unconstitutional.  As you may know The Commonwealth of Virginia filed suit the very day that Obamacare was signed into law.
A federal judge in Virginia struck down a key component of President Obama’s health care reform law on Monday, finding Congress exceeded its powers under the Constitution when it required all adult citizens to purchase health insurance  or pay a penalty.
U.S. District Henry Hudson, in a 42-page opinion, granted the state of Virginia summary judgment in its suit seeking to declare the insurance mandate unconstitutional, thus threatening the entire package of insurance reforms in the 2,700-page law.
Hudson declined to issue an injunction barring the administration from enforcing the law, however, saying “the likelihood of irreparable harm is minimal” even though employers and citizens must prepare for the law even if it is ultimately struck down.

“When the Arizona exploded, she rained sailors.” — Memories of a survivorToday is the 69th anniversary of the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The next day the United States entered World War II against the Axis powers (Japan, Germany and Italy). It is remarkable that they are all allies of the United States today!

The culmination of that battle was the sinking of the USS Arizona at the cost of over 1100 American men. They are forever entombed in the ship. The Arizona memorial remains the most popular attraction in Hawaii, please visit when you are in the state. But we should never forget what happened today. Here are a couple of pictures taken from my honeymoon of the Arizona as she sits today under water.

Amazingly, she is still leaking oil after all these years!

CLASSIC VIDEO: US troops boo Kathy Griffin for insulting Bristol Palin

Good for these US Troops!  They showed class that Kathy Griffin will never have.  When she mocked Bristol Palin for possibly gaining weight she was loudly booed by the troops.  Just another example of Liberal and Leftist Hatred:

T'is the Season - for giving to charities

Today's post is about charitable giving.  This is the season for giving and being charitable.  In American politics there is a vast divide between those who give and those who don't.  Society would have you believe that is the left, the Liberals, who are the givers and who donate.  Not true.  Across the board, despite making less money Conservative give substantially more money to charity, volunteer more often and even donate blood more frequently!

Sixteen months ago, Arthur C. Brooks, a professor at Syracuse University, published "Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism." The surprise is that liberals are markedly less charitable than conservatives.
  • If many conservatives are liberals who have been mugged by reality, Brooks, a registered independent, is, as a reviewer of his book said, a social scientist who has been mugged by data. They include these findings:
  • Although liberal families' incomes average 6 percent higher than those of conservative families, conservative-headed households give, on average, 30 percent more to charity than the average liberal-headed household ($1,600 per year vs. $1,227).
  • Conservatives also donate more time and give more blood.
  • Residents of the states that voted for John Kerry in 2004 gave smaller percentages of their incomes to charity than did residents of states that voted for George Bush.
  • Bush carried 24 of the 25 states where charitable giving was above average.
  • In the 10 reddest states, in which Bush got more than 60 percent majorities, the average percentage of personal income donated to charity was 3.5. Residents of the bluest states, which gave Bush less than 40 percent, donated just 1.9 percent.
  • People who reject the idea that "government has a responsibility to reduce income inequality" give an average of four times more than people who accept that proposition.
  • Brooks demonstrates a correlation between charitable behavior and "the values that lie beneath" liberal and conservative labels. Two influences on charitable behavior are religion and attitudes about the proper role of government.
  • The single biggest predictor of someone's altruism, Willett says, is religion. It increasingly correlates with conservative political affiliations because, as Brooks' book says, "the percentage of self-described Democrats who say they have 'no religion' has more than quadrupled since the early 1970s." America is largely divided between religious givers and secular nongivers, and the former are disproportionately conservative.
The misconceptions about charitable giving are impressive.  Consider this:
Q. How much do the rich in America give, compared with everyone else?
A. In order for a person to give money away, he or she must have it in the first place. Not surprisingly then, income and charitable giving in America are positively related. For example, in the year 2000, families earning $20,000 or less gave an average of about $450 to charity, while families earning more than $100,000 gave away an average of a bit more than $3,000. The top 10 percent of households in income are responsible for at least a quarter of all the money contributed to charity, and households with total wealth exceeding $1 million give about half of all charitable donations. The American rich are generous, on average.
Yet when we measure monetary giving as a percentage of income in order to ascertain the level of one’s “sacrifice,” we find a surprising result: it is low-income working families that are the most generous group in America, giving away about 4.5 percent of their income on average. This compares to about 2.5 percent among the middle class, and 3 percent among high-income families.
One common explanation for the fact that the working poor give so much is, not surprisingly, religion. The working poor tend to belong to congregations that are relatively literal about Biblical injunctions to give. Data from 2000 show that these poor American families were roughly twice as likely as middle-class families to be Seventh-Day Adventists, Pentecostals, or Jehovah’s Witnesses. They were also significantly less likely to belong to more “mainline”—and less stringent—denominations such as Episcopalian, Methodist, and Presbyterian.
Who gives the most in America: conservatives or liberals?
A. There is a persistent stereotype about charitable giving in politically progressive regions of America: while people on the political right may be hardworking and family-oriented, they tend not to be very charitable toward the less fortunate. In contrast, those on the political left care about vulnerable members of society, and are thus the charitable ones. Understanding “charity” in terms of voluntary gifts of money (instead of government income redistribution), this stereotype is wrong.
The fact is that self-described “conservatives” in America are more likely to give—and give more money—than self-described “liberals.” In the year 2000, households headed by a conservative gave, on average, 30 percent more dollars to charity than households headed by a liberal. And this discrepancy in monetary donations is not simply an artifact of income differences. On the contrary, liberal families in these data earned an average of 6 percent more per year than conservative families.
These differences go beyond money. Take blood donations, for example. In 2002, conservative Americans were more likely to donate blood each year, and did so more often, than liberals. People who said they were “conservative” or “extremely conservative” made up less than one-fifth of the population, but donated more than a quarter of the blood. To put this in perspective, if political liberals and moderates gave blood like conservatives do, the blood supply in the United States would surge by nearly half.
One major explanation for the giving discrepancy between conservatives and liberals is religion. In 2004, conservatives were more than twice as likely as liberals to attend a house of worship weekly, whereas liberals were twice as likely as conservatives to attend seldom or never. There are indeed religious liberals in America, but they are currently outnumbered by religious conservatives by about four to one.
