The first verse of "The Star-Spangled Banner" is actually two questions:
1) Is our flag still flying?
2) Did it survive the all-night bombardment?
The song, and its questions serve as a metaphor. At the time, they specfically were asking, "Does the US still occupy Fort McHenry? Key turned that question into the more general "Does the US, and its IDEALS, still exist as a country?"
What other country asks itself, "Do we still exist? Are we still who we say we are?" every time we sing our national anthem?
The male team answered with a resounding "YES!". The female team, on the other hand, answered with a cringing "no."
