Now it's being reported that a bottle of wine a week - may be better than stating for your heart! Via The Telegraph and Yahoo.
Drinking a bottle of wine a week could be better than statins for the heart, research suggests.
A study examined the impact of a Mediterranean diet and drinking habits on the heart health of hundreds of people.
Until now, studies on the benefits of wine to heart health have had mixed results.
Many have relied on those taking part to self-report how much they drink, which is “prone to measurement errors”.
The new study published in the European Heart Journal examined an “objective” measure of wine consumption in urine, by looking for levels of a chemical called tartaric acid.
Spanish researchers used data from a study measuring the impacts of a Mediterranean diet – a diet high in olive oil, vegetables, fruit, nuts and fish, and low in sweet or processed food and drink – on health among older adults at high risk of heart disease.
As well as completing questionnaires on their food and drink consumption, the 1,232 people involved in the research also provided urine samples at the start and end of the trial.
After four or five years of follow-up, there were 685 cases of heart disease, including heart attack, stroke or death from cardiovascular disease.
The study found that light drinkers – those consuming three to 12 small glasses of wine per month – had a 38 per cent lower risk of heart disease, compared with those who had less than one glass.
The best results were found among those drinking between 12 and 35 small glasses of wine each month, classed as moderate drinking.
Glasses were smaller than the standard British measures – at 100ml each – so this equates to up to a bottle a week.
These participants had a 50 per cent lower risk of heart disease than those having one glass or less. This compares to an average 25 per cent reduction in risk of heart disease after five years on statins.
